The following piece, which appeared in our Fall 1999 issue, reviewed a book by Sarah Waters, Tipping the Velvet, a new edition of which has just been published by Little, Brown Book Group. This review of Waters’ debut novel seems prescient in light of this writers’ subsequent critical and popular success as a lesbian novelist. The GLR would go on to review three more of her novels in subsequent issues. Reviving this review is also a way to thank its author, Martha E. Stone, for her extraordinary service to the GLR over the years.

Ms. Moyles’ works of fiction and poetry have been published in many literary journals, and her journalism in many magazines, and on websites. Over the past ten years, Moyles has worked intimately with rural communities in Nicaragua, Guatemala, Cuba, Canada, and East Africa. She focuses her research and writing on human rights, education, food security, potable water, and gender equality. In 2010, she found the Ceiba Association, a youth-run organization to promote social justice in local and global communities. Her next book will chronicle her experiences over three summers working as a Fire Tower Lookout at a remote location in Canada’s northern boreal forest. Ms. Moyles lives in Peace River, Alberta.

The Paying Guests is another wild ride of a novel. Divided into a love story and a crime drama, the two parts are separated by 35 of the grisliest pages I have read in some time. This shift requires some readjustment for the reader, but Waters is so confident – and, line by line, her writing so beautiful, precise and polished – that she sweeps all before her. I succumbed.

Frances has transgressed in the past, with a young woman who now lives with another woman in central London, reminiscent of same-sex couples Waters described in The Night Watch. Rather than go down that route, Frances chose to remain with her scandalised family and to look after her widowed mother – to "settle into your role", as she is horrified to hear a family friend put it. Now, unexpectedly, she has a second chance.

Tipping the Velvet is a historical novel written by Sarah Waters published in 1998

Aside from writing books, Julie works as a television host, spends lots of time at the karate dojo and swims laps while laughing at comedy on her waterproof radio. She lives with her husband and twins in Los Angeles.

We are now sneaking up on closing time, a short ballad sequence; Trickle is a slowly measured piano theme which has the air of Manu Katché’s former boss about it; Jan Garbarek would have fitted in easily here. Filmatic, stylised, it fades like romance fades in Nordic noir. And we arrive at only one tune away from the Presentation. Double bass signals Out of Sight, a late night stroll back to the underground car park. Watch the lights, watch your back, it’s been a good evening let’s not spoil it now. Four figure snare, step up the pace. There is a crushed brass refrain which keeps things on the straight path. These two good fellas: Luca Aquino (trumpet) and Nils Langren (trombone) could have come out of the dark a lot more on this recording; when they do get to spray colour on the proceedings it works well.

is renowned for transgression. Whether setting lesbian relationships centre stage (still unusual, though less shocking these days), modernising an established genre (Dickensian potboiler in Fingersmith; country-house ghost story in The Little Stranger; gothic thriller in Affinity), or experimenting structurally (the second world war drama The Night Watch is told backwards), she is not afraid to play with her readers' expectations. However, she never loses control of her material, allowing us the thrill of going off piste with her while knowing we will get down in one piece.

Each of the five KC originals come loaded with themes which mean that on any one piece soprano, alto, tenor and baritone reeds are tasked with tracking an embroidery of scored music travelling in multiple directions. What I hear is something of itself – for instance the second track VROOM/Coda: Marine 475 is a tricky swirl of saxophones with a resolution that comes off Simcock’s own piano (or pianoforte, so say the sleeve notes). The third track, The Night Watch, is given a clever grandstand opening with the quartet circling a secretive piano figure. The shortest track is called Two Hands which places the focus on Graeme Blevins's soprano saxophone. Technically he has the straight horn sorted.
