This essay tries to explain the symbolic significance of numbers from one to ten from Hindu perspective and their association with some important concepts and divinities of Hinduism. It also explores how ancient Indians used numbers to organize the knowledge they had about creation and systematically ascertain the order of divinities in a complex pantheon to envision a grand view of Hindu cosmology from a numerical perspective. Most of the information, which is provided in this essay is a product of this writer's intuitive awareness and personal study and may not be found elsewhere. This article is an attempt to present before the readers the idea that numbers were used in religious ceremonies and rituals as symbols of divinities and their energies. The ancient seers of India intuited the play of numbers in the order and regularity of the world. For their times, it was an astounding discovery, which is now confirmed beyond doubt by modern science.
As stated before, Ganga symbolizes pure consciousness or the intelligence (prajna) of supreme Brahman. She flows in the heaven as the very essence of Brahman. When she descends into the humans (jivas) through an awakening, facilitated by their penance, intelligence (buddhi) and purity (sattva), she liberates them from mortality and helps the bound souls (jivatmas) to return to the world of Brahman through the path of gods, known as devayana. The path represents the ascent or return of Ganga from the earth back to the highest heaven. She descends into the mortal world through the Southern Path as rains and facilitates rebirth by becoming the waters of life in the body, and life nourishing water in the earth. She ascends and returns to the heaven through the Northern Path (Uttarayana), also known as the Path of Gods (Devayana) or the path to immortality, and carries with her all the liberated souls. In the process she comes to a full circle, like the infinity itself.

Ten is the first double digit number formed by the coming together of one and zero. The zero stands for nirguna Brahman. The one stands for both Saguna Brahman and the individual Atman. In the number 10 thus we find a very deep symbolic significance. The number symbolically represents the incarnation of God, the conscious and willful coming together of the transcendent and the immanent, of the mortal and the immortal, with God manifesting himself fully in earthly form with his splendor and energies. In a less significant way it also symbolizes a self realized yogi who has experienced Brahman or Atman in human body. An awakened being is complete and different from an ordinary mortal because she has the internal awareness of 10 while the latter has only that of 01.

Note: This is next in series to the in which I have explained the deeper symbolism hidden in the descent of the River Ganga from the highest heaven and its manifestation upon earth. Here I have explained the importance of the river as a purifier and liberator. I may keep improving this essay as the knowledge of the Ganga flows into my mind. Jayaram V

In the garden of Jung's country home in Bollingen stands a large cube-shaped stone inscribed by his own hand with magical and alchemical symbols. In his last revelatory dream prior to his death, Jung saw a huge round stone engraved with the words "And this shall be a sign unto you of Wholeness and Oneness". Perhaps these signs of the wondrous stone of the great work will serve to remind the many whose lives and souls were touched by the Swiss Wizard, of the great work to be done, the great miracle to be accomplished. It is to be hoped that such an awakening of mindfulness will please Carl Gustav Jung in the far land to which he journeyed, and that it will assist those who are still in this sub-lunar world in their search for the quintessence, the stone of the philosophers and the supreme good.
